Arrive in Sauraha, a small town located near Chitwan National Park, where most visitors stay. Sauraha is filled with cozy guesthouses, resorts, and restaurants offering local Nepali cuisine as well as international options. After settling in, take a walk around the village, which is a lovely way to see the local Tharu culture. The Tharu people have unique traditions, dances, and craftsmanship.

In the evening, attend a Tharu cultural dance show, where locals perform traditional dances with bamboo sticks and beautiful attire. It’s a lively introduction to the cultural side of Chitwan.

For dinner, enjoy authentic Nepali food at KC’s Restaurant or Jungle View Restaurant, which offer both local and Western cuisine.

Day 2: Jungle Safari and Canoe Ride

Morning: Jeep Safari or Elephant Safari

Start your day early with a jungle safari into Chitwan National Park. You have options for a Jeep safari or, in some cases, an elephant-back safari (although many travelers now choose Jeep safaris due to animal welfare concerns). The safari takes you deep into the heart of the park, where you’ll have a chance to spot the one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tigers (rare but possible), leopards, sloth bears, and a variety of deer species. The park is also known for its rich birdlife, with over 500 bird species, including kingfishers, eagles, and peacocks.

Afternoon: Canoe Ride and Jungle Walk

After the safari, enjoy a peaceful canoe ride along the Rapti River. Gliding silently along the water, you may spot mugger crocodiles and the critically endangered Gharial crocodile, which has a unique, narrow snout. Canoeing is a serene experience, giving you the opportunity to see wildlife up close.

Following the canoe ride, join a jungle walk with a local guide who will help you learn more about the flora and fauna of the region. Guides are highly skilled in tracking animals and ensuring safety, making this walk both educational and thrilling.

For the evening, relax and unwind by the Rapti River and watch the sunset with a cool drink. Many restaurants along the riverfront offer great views, and it’s a beautiful, tranquil experience.

Day 3: Bird Watching and Elephant Breeding Center

Morning: Bird Watching Tour

Wake up early for a bird watching tour—Chitwan is a bird watcher’s paradise. The park’s diverse habitats of wetlands, grasslands, and forests support a huge variety of birds. With the help of a knowledgeable guide, you’ll have a chance to spot colorful species like the Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Indian Roller, and Great Hornbill.

Afternoon: Elephant Breeding Center

After breakfast, head to the Elephant Breeding Center in Sauraha, where you can learn more about the conservation efforts for Nepal’s elephants. You’ll have a chance to see young elephants and learn about the center’s work to support their breeding and conservation. The baby elephants are especially endearing and offer a unique perspective on conservation challenges.

In the evening, take some time to relax at your hotel or visit some local shops for souvenirs. Handicrafts and Tharu artifacts make for wonderful mementos from your trip.

The ideal time to visit Chitwan is from October to March. The weather is dry and cool, which is perfect for safaris and wildlife spotting. The monsoon season (June to September) brings heavy rains, making some parts of the park inaccessible.
