Kalimpong, nestled in the Eastern Himalayas in West Bengal, is a serene hill station offering breathtaking landscapes, diverse flora, and a harmonious mix of cultures. Known for its monasteries, colonial architecture, and spectacular views of the snow-capped Kanchenjunga range, Kalimpong offers a peaceful retreat for nature lovers, spiritual seekers, and adventure enthusiasts alike.
Start your morning at Durpin Dara Hill, one of the highest points in Kalimpong, where you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the Teesta River, surrounding valleys, and the distant Kanchenjunga range. The hill is also home to Zang Dhok Palri Phodang Monastery, which houses rare Buddhist scriptures brought from Tibet. The monastery's peaceful atmosphere and colorful prayer flags create a sense of calm that sets the tone for the day.
Kalimpong is famous for its nurseries, and Pine View Nursery is among the best, with a vast collection of beautiful cacti and succulents. This nursery is a unique and surprising find, housing varieties of cacti from all around the world. Stroll through the greenhouse, admiring the rare species that make this nursery an important stop for botanical enthusiasts.
Lunch: Head to Gompu’s Restaurant for authentic Tibetan and Nepali dishes, such as momos (dumplings) and thukpa (noodle soup).
End the day by visiting the Kalimpong Arts and Crafts Centre, where you can explore the vibrant handicrafts made by local artisans. The center preserves traditional crafts like woven textiles, wood carvings, and handmade paper. It’s an excellent place to buy souvenirs and support the local economy.
Begin your day with a visit to Deolo Hill, a popular spot offering panoramic views of Kalimpong town, Teesta Valley, and the majestic mountains. The hilltop has beautifully landscaped gardens, and if you’re up for a bit of adventure, you can try paragliding here. Deolo Hill is the perfect spot for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers.
Spend the afternoon exploring Thongsa Gompa (also known as Bhutanese Monastery), the oldest monastery in Kalimpong, dating back to 1692. With its peaceful ambiance, it’s a great place to learn about Buddhist culture and traditions.
Next, head to Tharpa Choling Monastery, located on Tirpai Hill. Founded in 1912, this monastery belongs to the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism and houses an impressive collection of scriptures and Buddhist artifacts. Both monasteries provide a glimpse into Kalimpong’s deep-rooted spiritual culture.
As the day winds down, visit Rishi Road Market, Kalimpong's bustling bazaar. You’ll find a variety of local products, from handcrafted goods and woolen items to organic produce and Tibetan artifacts. This is a lively area where you can observe the local lifestyle and sample some street food.
Located about 20 km from Kalimpong, Pedong is a small town known for its pristine natural beauty and historical significance. Visit the Pedong Monastery, which dates back to the Bhutanese period, and Damsang Fort Ruins, built in the 17th century to guard against invasions. This charming town is perfect for a relaxed morning exploration.
If you have time and are open to adventure, visit the small village of Lava, around 34 km from Kalimpong. It serves as the gateway to Neora Valley National Park, one of the most biodiverse regions in the Eastern Himalayas. The park is a paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers, home to a variety of flora, red pandas, Himalayan black bears, and several species of birds.
Lunch: Enjoy a local lunch in Lava, where small eateries offer traditional Nepali and Tibetan dishes.
Head back to Kalimpong in the evening, and if you’re in the mood to unwind, consider stopping at one of the town’s cozy cafes, like Cafe Kalimpong or Cafe Refuel, for coffee and pastries while enjoying views of the hills.
The ideal times to visit Kalimpong are in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the weather is pleasant, skies are clear, and the flowers are in bloom.
