Located at the foothills of the mighty Kanchenjunga, Lachen is a tranquil, high-altitude village in the northern region of Sikkim, India. At an elevation of around 2,750 meters (9,000 feet), this picturesque town is known for its stunning natural beauty, vibrant Tibetan culture, and peaceful atmosphere. Lachen is a perfect destination for nature lovers, adventure enthusiasts, and those seeking serenity in the lap of the Himalayas.
Often considered a base camp for trekking and exploring the majestic Chopta Valley, Gurudongmar Lake, and Lachung, Lachen offers the ideal blend of rugged mountain terrain, pristine lakes, and traditional Tibetan hospitality.
Your journey to Lachen will be a scenic and adventurous one, taking you through winding mountain roads, beautiful valleys, and charming villages. The nearest airport to Lachen is Bagdogra, about 200 km away, and the nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri. From there, you can take a shared jeep or a private vehicle to reach Lachen.
As you ascend towards Lachen, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains, dense forests, and gushing rivers. The journey itself is a fantastic way to experience the natural beauty of Sikkim.
Upon arrival, check into your hotel and take a moment to relax and acclimatize to the altitude. The cool mountain breeze and tranquil surroundings offer an instant sense of peace.
Lachen is a small village with a population of around 1,000 people, mostly of Tibetan origin. The village is known for its traditional wooden houses, prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and the serene environment that invites visitors to relax and unwind.
Take a leisurely walk through the village, exploring its quaint streets. You’ll come across the Lachen Monastery, a small Buddhist monastery that offers a quiet retreat. The monastery is adorned with intricate paintings and statues of Buddhist deities and is an ideal spot to soak in the peaceful vibes of Lachen.
Lunch: Enjoy a warm, hearty meal at a local restaurant or your hotel. Sikkimese food is delicious, and you can try local dishes like momos, thukpa (noodle soup), and phagshapa (pork and radish curry) to fuel up for the adventures ahead.
As Lachen is situated at a high altitude, it’s crucial to rest and allow your body to acclimatize. The evening in Lachen is peaceful and quiet, with the sounds of nature being the only thing you’ll hear. Sit back and relax, and perhaps enjoy a cup of butter tea (Chiya), a traditional Tibetan drink, while you take in the stunning view of the mountains surrounding you.
After an early breakfast, embark on a thrilling road trip to Gurudongmar Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world, situated at an altitude of around 5,430 meters (17,800 feet). The drive to the lake from Lachen is an adventure in itself, as you pass through rugged mountain terrains, vast meadows, and picturesque landscapes. The road is bumpy and challenging, but the views are absolutely worth it.
Gurudongmar Lake is considered sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists and is surrounded by towering mountains. The lake remains frozen for most of the year, but during summer, the clear blue water reflects the majestic mountains, creating a surreal and mesmerizing sight.
Tip: Due to the high altitude, it’s important to stay hydrated and take it slow while visiting Gurudongmar Lake. It’s recommended to spend only a short time at the lake to avoid altitude sickness.
On your way back to Lachen, stop by Chopta Valley, another scenic gem of the region. Known for its lush meadows, alpine vegetation, and views of the snow-capped peaks, Chopta Valley is a perfect spot for nature walks, photography, and simply soaking in the beauty of the Himalayas.
The valley is dotted with beautiful wildflowers, especially during the summer months, and the views of Kanchenjunga in the distance make it an ideal spot for a picnic or a short trek.
Lunch: Head back to Lachen for lunch after visiting Chopta Valley, and enjoy another traditional Sikkimese meal to replenish your energy.
After a day filled with adventure and exploration, return to your hotel in Lachen and relax. Take a walk around the village or spend some time chatting with the locals, who are known for their warm hospitality. The evening sky, with its crisp air and the mountains bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun, offers a perfect end to your day.
On your final day, take a short trip to the nearby town of Lachung, which is approximately 47 km from Lachen. Lachung is another beautiful hill station known for its stunning landscapes, traditional wooden houses, and the Yumthang Valley (also called the “Valley of Flowers”).
While in Lachung, you can explore the Lachung Monastery, visit the Yumthang Valley for its incredible views of alpine flowers and hot springs, and relax in the peaceful surroundings.
After exploring Lachung, return to Lachen for a brief rest. If you have time, you can visit the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, which is located between Lachen and Lachung and is home to a variety of rhododendron species. It’s a beautiful place to enjoy nature before departing.
In the afternoon or evening, start your journey back to Gangtok or Bagdogra (depending on your departure plans), filled with memories of this remote and enchanting Himalayan village.
The best time to visit Lachen is from March to June (spring and summer), when the weather is pleasant and the landscapes are lush and green. If you’re a snow lover, visiting in December to February will give you the chance to witness Lachen covered in snow, along with clear skies and chilly weather.
Note: The weather in Lachen can be unpredictable, so it’s essential to carry warm clothing even during the summer months.
Lachen is a hidden gem of the Himalayas, offering an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life and an opportunity to immerse yourself in the raw beauty of nature. Whether you're visiting the sacred Gurudongmar Lake, exploring the valley, or simply enjoying the serenity of the village, Lachen promises a unique and memorable experience for all who venture to this part of Sikkim. Its peaceful ambiance, stunning landscapes, and Tibetan culture will leave you with a sense of awe and a desire to return to this beautiful corner of the world.
