Jaisalmer, fondly known as the “Golden City,” is located on the edge of the Thar Desert and boasts an otherworldly charm with its golden sandstone architecture, vast sand dunes, and vibrant culture. This city transports travelers back to Rajasthan’s medieval era, with camel rides, havelis, and grand forts that tell stories of the past.
Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Quila)
Built in 1156 AD, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the few “living forts” in the world, with a thriving community of people residing within its walls. Known as Sonar Quila or the Golden Fort, it glows with a golden hue under the sun. Wander through narrow lanes, admire Jain temples, and explore ancient palaces while soaking up the unique atmosphere of the fort.
Patwon Ki Haveli
This grand haveli is a collection of five havelis built by a wealthy merchant family. Famous for its intricate carvings and exquisite jharokhas (balconies), Patwon Ki Haveli offers a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of Jaisalmer’s merchants and is a photographer’s paradise.
Sam Sand Dunes
The Sam Sand Dunes, located about 45 km from Jaisalmer, are famous for their rolling sand dunes and desert safari experiences. You can ride a camel or take a jeep safari to explore the Thar Desert. Visit at sunset for spectacular views, and stay overnight at a desert camp for a truly immersive experience.
Gadisar Lake
This peaceful lake was constructed by Maharaja Gadsi Singh in the 14th century. It served as a crucial water reservoir for the city. Today, it’s a picturesque spot with temples and shrines around its edges, making it a great place for a serene boat ride or a morning stroll.
Bada Bagh
Located on the outskirts of the city, Bada Bagh is a series of royal cenotaphs (chhatris) built in honor of Jaisalmer’s rulers. The unique architecture and panoramic views of the desert landscape make it a stunning and somewhat haunting spot, especially at sunrise or sunset.
Salim Singh Ki Haveli
Known for its distinctive architecture, Salim Singh Ki Haveli has an arched roof in the shape of a peacock and elaborate balconies that look like they’re floating in the air. It’s a marvel of engineering and adds to Jaisalmer’s enchanting architectural landscape.
Desert National Park
For nature lovers, a trip to the Desert National Park offers a chance to see unique desert flora and fauna, including the endangered Great Indian Bustard. This vast park provides a deeper insight into the Thar Desert ecosystem and is great for birdwatching and nature photography.
Desert Camping and Cultural Show
Spend a night in a desert camp at Sam Sand Dunes or Khuri. Camps offer comfortable tents with all amenities, plus traditional Rajasthani performances, with folk music, dance, and a delicious meal under the star-lit desert sky.
Camel Safari in the Thar Desert
Camel rides are a quintessential Jaisalmer experience. They take you through the golden dunes, giving you a unique perspective of the desert. Choose from shorter rides to longer excursions for an unforgettable desert adventure.
Exploring the Golden Streets
Walk through Jaisalmer’s old streets with houses and markets built in golden sandstone. Discover local handicrafts, silver jewelry, mirrorwork textiles, and other Rajasthani goods that make perfect souvenirs.
Enjoy Rajasthani Cuisine
Try local specialties like ker sangri, dal baati churma, and laal maas at well-known eateries like Desert Boy’s Dhani, The Trio, or at a desert camp to experience authentic flavors in a unique setting.
The ideal time to visit Jaisalmer is from October to March when the weather is cooler and more comfortable for sightseeing and desert activities. Jaisalmer also hosts the Desert Festival in February, featuring camel races, folk performances, and cultural events.
Stay Hydrated
Jaisalmer can be dry and sunny, even in the winter. Keep yourself hydrated while exploring the city and desert.
Dress Appropriately for the Desert
If you’re planning a desert safari, wear comfortable clothing, closed shoes, and bring along a scarf or hat to protect yourself from the sun.
Book Desert Camps in Advance
Desert camps are popular, especially in peak season. Book your stay in advance if you want to spend a night in the desert.
Respect the Heritage
Jaisalmer’s forts and havelis are fragile and hold significant historical value. Avoid touching or damaging the carvings and artifacts to help preserve these heritage sites.
Jaisalmer is a captivating city that invites you to experience the magic of the desert, the grandeur of forts, and the vibrancy of Rajasthani culture. With its golden hues, historic charm, and endless stories, Jaisalmer promises a journey that will leave you with unforgettable memories and a sense of Rajasthan’s unique spirit.
